Thabit said: Anas bin Malik was asked about the Prophet (s.a.w) dyeing his hair. He said: ‘If I had wanted to count the number of white hairs on his head I could have done so.” And he said: “He did not dye his hair, but Abu Bakr dyed his hair with heena and Katam, and ‘Umar dyed his hair with pure henna.”

حَدَّثَنِي أَبُو الرَّبِيعِ الْعَتَكِيُّ ، حَدَّثَنَا حَمَّادٌ ، حَدَّثَنَا ثَابِتٌ ، قَالَ: سُئِلَ أَنَسُ بْنُ مَالِكٍ عَنْ خِضَابِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ؟ فَقَالَ : لَوْ شِئْتُ أَنْ أَعُدَّ شَمَطَاتٍ كُنَّ فِي رَأْسِهِ فَعَلْتُ ، وَقَالَ: لَمْ يَخْتَضِبْ ، وَقَدِ اخْتَضَبَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ بِالْحِنَّاءِ وَالْكَتَمِ ، وَاخْتَضَبَ عُمَرُ بِالْحِنَّاءِ بَحْتًا.

It was narrated that Anas bin Malik said: “It is disliked for a man to pluck out white hairs from his hair and beard.” He said: “And the Messenger of Allah (s.a.w) did not dye his hair; the white hairs were only in the tuft of hair between his lower lip and his chin, and at his temples, and a few on his head.”

حَدَّثَنَا نَصْرُ بْنُ عَلِيٍّ الْجَهْضَمِيُّ ، حَدَّثَنَا أَبِي ، حَدَّثَنَا الْمُثَنَّى بْنُ سَعِيدٍ ، عَنْ قَتَادَةَ ، عَنْ أَنَسِ بْنِ مَالِكٍ ، قَالَ: يُكْرَهُ أَنْ يَنْتِفَ الرَّجُلُ الشَّعْرَةَ الْبَيْضَاءَ مِنْ رَأْسِهِ وَلِحْيَتِهِ ، قَالَ: وَلَمْ يَخْتَضِبْ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، إِنَّمَا كَانَ الْبَيَاضُ فِي عَنْفَقَتِهِ وَفِي الصُّدْغَيْنِ وَفِي الرَّأْسِ نَبْذٌ.

It was narrated that Abu Juhaifah said: “I saw the Messenger of Allah (s.a.w) with this much white hair” – and Zuhair (a sub narrator) put one of his fingers on the tuft of hair between his lower lip and his chin. It was said to him: “How old were you on that day?” He said: “I was making arrows and putting feathers on them (i.e., had passed the age of childhood).”

حَدَّثَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ يُونُسَ ، حَدَّثَنَا زُهَيْرٌ ، حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو إِسْحَاقَ (ح) وَحَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ يَحْيَى ، أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو خَيْثَمَةَ ، عَنْ أَبِي إِسْحَاقَ ، عَنْ أَبِي جُحَيْفَةَ ، قَالَ: رَأَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، هَذِهِ مِنْهُ بَيْضَاءَ ، وَوَضَعَ زُهَيْرٌ بَعْضَ أَصَابِعِهِ عَلَى عَنْفَقَتِهِ , قِيلَ لَهُ: مِثْلُ مَنْ أَنْتَ يَوْمَئِذٍ ؟ فَقَالَ: أَبْرِي النَّبْلَ وَأَرِيشُهَا.

It was narrated that Abu Juhaifah said: “I saw the Messenger of Allah (s.a.w) with a white complexion and some white hairs. Al-Hasan bin ‘Ali resembled him.”

حَدَّثَنَا وَاصِلُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الأَعْلَى ، حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ فُضَيْلٍ ، عَنْ إِسْمَاعِيلَ بْنِ أَبِي خَالِدٍ ، عَنْ أَبِي جُحَيْفَةَ ، قَالَ: رَأَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَبْيَضَ , قَدْ شَابَ كَانَ الْحَسَنُ بْنُ عَلِيٍّ يُشْبِهُهُ.

It was narrated that Simak bin Harb said: “I heard Jabir bin Samurah being asked about the white hair of the Prophet (s.a.w). He said:‘When he (s.a.w) put oil on his hair none of them could be seen, and if he did not put oil on his hair, they could be seen.”’

وَحَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْمُثَنَّى ، حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو دَاوُدَ سُلَيْمَانُ بْنُ دَاوُدَ ، حَدَّثَنَا شُعْبَةُ ، عَنْ سِمَاكِ بْنِ حَرْبٍ ، قَالَ : سَمِعْتُ جَابِرَ بْنَ سَمُرَةَ ، سُئِلَ عَنْ شَيْبِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَقَالَ : كَانَ إِذَا دَهَنَ رَأْسَهُ لَمْ يُرَ مِنْهُ شَيْءٌ ، وَإِذَا لَمْ يَدْهُنْ رُئِيَ مِنْهُ.

Jabir bin Samurah said: “Some whiteness had appeared in the hair of the Messenger of Allah (s.a.w), at the front of his head and in his beard. If he put on his hair they could not be seen, but if his hair was uncombed, they could be seen, and the hair of his beard was thick.” A man asked: “Was his face bright like a sword?” He said: “No rather it was like the sun and the moon, and it was round. And I saw the Seal (of Prophet hood) on his shoulder, like a pigeon’s egg, the same color as his body.”

وَحَدَّثَنَا أَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ ، حَدَّثَنَا عُبَيْدُ اللهِ ، عَنْ إِسْرَائِيلَ ، عَنْ سِمَاكٍ ، أَنَّهُ سَمِعَ جَابِرَ بْنَ سَمُرَةَ ، يَقُولُ : كَانَ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَدْ شَمِطَ مُقَدَّمُ رَأْسِهِ وَلِحْيَتِهِ ، وَكَانَ إِذَا ادَّهَنَ لَمْ يَتَبَيَّنْ ، وَإِذَا شَعِثَ رَأْسُهُ تَبَيَّنَ ، وَكَانَ كَثِيرَ شَعْرِ اللِّحْيَةِ ، فَقَالَ : رَجُلٌ وَجْهُهُ مِثْلُ السَّيْفِ ؟ قَالَ : لاَ ، بَلْ كَانَ مِثْلَ الشَّمْسِ وَالْقَمَرِ ، وَكَانَ مُسْتَدِيرًا وَرَأَيْتُ الْخَاتَمَ عِنْدَ كَتِفِهِ مِثْلَ بَيْضَةِ الْحَمَامَةِ يُشْبِهُ جَسَدَهُ.

As-Sa’ib bin Yazid said: “My maternal aunt brought me to the Messenger of Allah (s.a.w) and said: ‘O Messenger of Allah, my sister’s son is ailing.’ He ((s.a.w)) wiped my head and prayed for blessing for me, then he performed Wudu and I drank some of his Wudu water. Then I stood behind him and saw the Seal between his shoulders, like a bird’s egg.

وَحَدَّثَنَا قُتَيْبَةُ بْنُ سَعِيدٍ ، وَمُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَبَّادٍ ، قَالاَ : حَدَّثَنَا حَاتِمٌ ، وَهُوَ ابْنُ إِسْمَاعِيلَ ، عَنِ الْجَعْدِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ ، قَالَ : سَمِعْتُ السَّائِبَ بْنَ يَزِيدَ ، يَقُولُ : ذَهَبَتْ بِي خَالَتِي إِلَى رَسُولِ اللهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، فَقَالَتْ : يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ ، إِنَّ ابْنَ أُخْتِي وَجِعٌ فَمَسَحَ رَأْسِي وَدَعَا لِي بِالْبَرَكَةِ ، ثُمَّ تَوَضَّأَ فَشَرِبْتُ مِنْ وَضُوئِهِ ، ثُمَّ قُمْتُ خَلْفَ ظَهْرِهِ فَنَظَرْتُ إِلَى خَاتَمِهِ بَيْنَ كَتِفَيْهِ مِثْلَ زِرِّ الْحَجَلَةِ.

It was narrated that ‘Abdullah bin Sarjis said: “I saw the Prophet (s.a.w) and I ate bread and meat with him” – or he said: “Tharid.” He (the narrator) said: “I said to him: ‘Did the Prophet (s.a.w) pray for forgiveness for you?’ He said: ‘Yes, and for you.’ Then he recited this Verse: ‘And ask forgiveness for your sin, and also for (the sin of) believing men and believing women.” He said: “Then I went behind him and looked at the Seal of Prophet – hood between his shoulders, near his left shoulder blade, the shape of a palm with the fingers held together, and on it were spots like moles.”

حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو كَامِلٍ ، حَدَّثَنَا حَمَّادٌ ، يَعْنِي ابْنَ زَيْدٍ (ح) وحَدَّثَنِي سُوَيْدُ بْنُ سَعِيدٍ ، حَدَّثَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ مُسْهِرٍ ، كِلاَهُمَا عَنْ عَاصِمٍ الأَحْوَلِ (ح) وحَدَّثَنِي حَامِدُ بْنُ عُمَرَ الْبَكْرَاوِيُّ ، وَاللَّفْظُ لَهُ ، حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الْوَاحِدِ ، يَعْنِي ابْنَ زِيَادٍ ، حَدَّثَنَا عَاصِمٌ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ سَرْجِسَ ، قَالَ : رَأَيْتُ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَأَكَلْتُ مَعَهُ خُبْزًا وَلَحْمًا ، أَوْ قَالَ : ثَرِيدًا ، قَالَ : فَقُلْتُ لَهُ : أَسْتَغْفَرَ لَكَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ؟ قَالَ : نَعَمْ ، وَلَكَ ، ثُمَّ تَلاَ هَذِهِ الآيَةَ : {وَاسْتَغْفِرْ لِذَنْبِكَ وَلِلْمُؤْمِنِينَ وَالْمُؤْمِنَاتِ} ، قَالَ : ثُمَّ دُرْتُ خَلْفَهُ ، فَنَظَرْتُ إِلَى خَاتَمِ النُّبُوَّةِ بَيْنَ كَتِفَيْهِ ، عِنْدَ نَاغِضِ كَتِفِهِ الْيُسْرَى ، جُمْعًا ، عَلَيْهِ خِيلاَنٌ كَأَمْثَالِ الثَّآلِيلِ.

It was narrated that Anas bin Malik said: “The Messenger of Allah (s.a.w) was neither very tall nor short, and he was neither glaringly white nor brown, and his hair was neither very curly not straight. Allah appointed him (as His Messenger) when he reached the age of forty, and he stayed in Makkah for ten years. Allah caused him to die when he was sixty years old, and there were no more than twenty white hairs in his hair and beard.”

حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ يَحْيَى ، قَالَ : قَرَأْتُ عَلَى مَالِكٍ ، عَنْ رَبِيعَةَ بْنِ أَبِي عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ ، عَنْ أَنَسِ بْنِ مَالِكٍ ، أَنَّهُ سَمِعَهُ يَقُولُ : كَانَ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ لَيْسَ بِالطَّوِيلِ الْبَائِنِ ، وَلاَ بِالْقَصِيرِ ، وَلَيْسَ بِالأَبْيَضِ الأَمْهَقِ وَلاَ بِالآدَمِ وَلاَ بِالْجَعْدِ الْقَطَطِ وَلاَ بِالسَّبِطِ ، بَعَثَهُ اللَّهُ عَلَى رَأْسِ أَرْبَعِينَ سَنَةً فَأَقَامَ بِمَكَّةَ عَشْرَ سِنِينَ وَبِالْمَدِينَةِ عَشْرَ سِنِينَ ، وَتَوَفَّاهُ اللَّهُ عَلَى رَأْسِ سِتِّينَ سَنَةً ، وَلَيْسَ فِي رَأْسِهِ وَلِحْيَتِهِ عِشْرُونَ شَعْرَةً بَيْضَاءَ.

It was narrated that Anas bin Malik said: “The Messenger of Allah (s.a.w) died when he was sixty-three years old, and Abu Bakr As-Siddiq died when he was Sixty-three years old, and ‘Umar died when he was sixty-three years old.”

حَدَّثَنِي أَبُو غَسَّانَ الرَّازِيُّ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَمْرٍو ، حَدَّثَنَا حَكَّامُ بْنُ سَلْمٍ ، حَدَّثَنَا عُثْمَانُ بْنُ زَائِدَةَ ، عَنِ الزُّبَيْرِ بْنِ عَدِيٍّ ، عَنْ أَنَسِ بْنِ مَالِكٍ ، قَالَ: قُبِضَ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، وَهُوَ ابْنُ ثَلاَثٍ وَسِتِّينَ ، وَأَبُو بَكْرٍ ، وَهُوَ ابْنُ ثَلاَثٍ وَسِتِّينَ ، وَعُمَرُ ، وَهُوَ ابْنُ ثَلاَثٍ وَسِتِّينَ.
