سَاَلَ سَآىِٕلٌۢ بِعَذَابٍ وَّاقِعٍۙ۝۱

AN INQUIRER ASKED for the affliction that is to come

لِّلْكٰفِرِیْنَ لَیْسَ لَهٗ دَافِعٌۙ۝۲

Upon the infidels -- which none would be able to repel --

مِّنَ اللّٰهِ ذِی الْمَعَارِجِؕ۝۳

From God, the Lord of the steps (of progression),

تَعْرُجُ الْمَلٰٓىِٕكَةُ وَ الرُّوْحُ اِلَیْهِ فِیْ یَوْمٍ كَانَ مِقْدَارُهٗ خَمْسِیْنَ اَلْفَ سَنَةٍۚ۝۴

To whom the angels and the soul take a day to ascend, whose length is fifty thousand years.

فَاصْبِرْ صَبْرًا جَمِیْلًا۝۵

So persevere with becoming patience.

اِنَّهُمْ یَرَوْنَهٗ بَعِیْدًاۙ۝۶

They surely take it to be far away,

وَّ نَرٰىهُ قَرِیْبًاؕ۝۷

But We see it very near.

یَوْمَ تَكُوْنُ السَّمَآءُ كَالْمُهْلِۙ۝۸

The day the sky becomes like molten brass,

وَ تَكُوْنُ الْجِبَالُ كَالْعِهْنِۙ۝۹

The mountains like the tufts of (carded) wool,

وَ لَا یَسْـَٔلُ حَمِیْمٌ حَمِیْمًاۚۖ۝۱۰

And no friend inquires after friend
