It was narrated from Ibn 'Umar that when the Messenger of Allah (s.a.w) went out on the day of 'Eid, he ordered that a Harbah be placed in front of him (as Sutra), and he prayed facing it, with the people behind him. He used to do that when he traveled as well, hence the governors adopted that.

'Awn bin Abi Juhaifah narrated that his father said: "I came to the Prophet (s.a.w) in Makkah while he was in Al-Abtah, in a tent of red leather. Bilal came out with his (left over) Wudu' water, and those who got some wiped themselves with it. Then the Prophet (s.a.w) came out, wearing a red Hullah (dress). It is as if I can see the whiteness of his shins. He performed Wudu' and Bilal call the Adhan, and I watched his face moving to this side and that, to the right and the left as he said: 'Hayya 'alas-salat, Hayya alal-falah (come to prayer, come to prosperity).' Then an 'Anazah was set up for him (as Sutra), and he went forward and prayed Zuhr with two Rak'ah Qasr(shortened as he was traveling) with donkeys and dogs passing in front of him and not being stopped. Then he prayed 'Asr with two Rak'ah, then he continued to offer two Rak'ah prayers until he returned to Al-Madinah."

'Awn bin Abi Juhaifah narrated that his father saw the Messenger of Allah (s.a.w) in a tent of red leather, and he saw Bilal bring out his (left over) Wudu' water. I saw the people racing to get it; those who got some wiped themselves with it, and those who did not get any took some of the moisture from their companions' hands. Then I saw Bilal bring out an 'Anazah and set it up (as Sutra), and the Messenger of Allah (s.a.w) came out wearing a red Hullah (dress) rolling (it) up. He led the people in praying two Rak'ah, facing the 'Anazah, and I saw people and animals pass in front of 'Anazah.

A young man from Banu Abi Mu'ait came and wanted to pass in front of him. He pushed him in his chest, and (the young man) looked but could not find any way to get by except by passing in front of Abu Sa'eed. So he came back, and he pushed him in the chest harder than he had the first time. He stood up and insulted Abu Sa'eed, then he pushed through the crowds, and he left, and then he entered upon Marwan and complained to him about what had happened. Abu Sa'eed entered upon Marwan and Marwan said to him: 'What is the matter with you and your brother's son? He came and complained about you.' Abu Sa'eed said: 'I heard the Messenger of Allah (s.a.w) say: "If one of you prays facing towards something that is screening him from the people, and someone wants to pass in front of him (and the Sutrah), let him push him in the chest, and if he insists then let him fight him, for he is a devil."'
