It was narrated that Zaid bin Arqam said: "I do not tell you anything but that which the Messenger of Allah (s.a.w) said. He used to say: 'Allahumma, inni a'udhu bika minal- 'ajzi wal-kasali, wal-jubni wal-bukhli, wal-harami wa 'adhabil-qabr. Allahumma, ati nafsi taqwaha, wa zakkiha anta khairu man zakkaha, anta waliyyuha wa mawlaha. Allahumma inni a'udhu bika min 'ilmi la yanfa'u wa min qalbilla yakhsha'u, wa min nafsilla yashba'u, wa min da'watilla yustajabu laha (O Allah, I seek refuge with You from helplessness, laziness, cowardice, miserliness, old age and the torment of the grave. O Allah, grant my soul piety and purify it, for You are the best to purify it, You are its Guardian and its Lord. O Allah, I seek refuge with You from knowledge that is not beneficial, a heart that is not humble (before You), a soul that is not satisfied and a prayer that is not answered)."'

حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ أَبِى شَيْبَةَ وَإِسْحَاقُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ وَمُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ نُمَيْرٍ - وَاللَّفْظُ لاِبْنِ نُمَيْرٍ - قَالَ إِسْحَاقُ أَخْبَرَنَا وَقَالَ الآَخَرَانِ حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو مُعَاوِيَةَ عَنْ عَاصِمٍ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ الْحَارِثِ وَعَنْ أَبِى عُثْمَانَ النَّهْدِىِّ عَنْ زَيْدِ بْنِ أَرْقَمَ قَالَ لاَ أَقُولُ لَكُمْ إِلاَّ كَمَا كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ -صلى الله عليه وسلم- يَقُولُ كَانَ يَقُولُ « اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّى أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنَ الْعَجْزِ وَالْكَسَلِ وَالْجُبْنِ وَالْبُخْلِ وَالْهَرَمِ وَعَذَابِ الْقَبْرِ اللَّهُمَّ آتِ نَفْسِى تَقْوَاهَا وَزَكِّهَا أَنْتَ خَيْرُ مَنْ زَكَّاهَا أَنْتَ وَلِيُّهَا وَمَوْلاَهَا اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّى أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ عِلْمٍ لاَ يَنْفَعُ وَمِنْ قَلْبٍ لاَ يَخْشَعُ وَمِنْ نَفْسٍ لاَ تَشْبَعُ وَمِنْ دَعْوَةٍ لاَ يُسْتَجَابُ لَهَا ».

It was narrated that 'Abdullah bin Mas'ud said: "When evening came the Messenger of Allah (s.a.w) would say: 'Amsaina wa amsal-mulkulillahi, wal-hamdulillahi la ilaha illallahu wahdahu la sharika lah (We have reached the evening and the dominion belongs to Allah, and praise be to Allah, none has the right to be worshiped but Allah alone with no partner or associate)."' Al-Hasan (one of the narrators) said: "Az-Zubaid told me that he memorized it from Ibrahim as follows: 'Lahul-mulku wa lahul-hamdu wa huwa 'ala kulli shay'in qadir. Allahumma as'aluka khaira hadhihil-lailati, wa a'udhu bika min sharri hadhihil-lailati, wa sharri ma ba'daha. Allahumma inni a'udhu bika minal-kasali wa su'il-kibar. Allahumma inni a'udhu bika min 'adhabin fin-nari wa 'adhabin fil-qabr (His is the dominion, to Him is praise and He has power over all things. O Allah, I ask You for the good of this night and the good of what follows it, and I seek refuge in You from the evil of this night and the evil of what follows it. O Allah, I seek refuge in You from laziness and the evil of arrogance. O Allah, I seek refuge in You from torment in the Fire and torment in the Grave)."

حَدَّثَنَا قُتَيْبَةُ بْنُ سَعِيدٍ حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الْوَاحِدِ بْنُ زِيَادٍ عَنِ الْحَسَنِ بْنِ عُبَيْدِ اللَّهِ حَدَّثَنَا إِبْرَاهِيمُ بْنُ سُوَيْدٍ النَّخَعِىُّ حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ يَزِيدَ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ مَسْعُودٍ قَالَ كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ -صلى الله عليه وسلم- إِذَا أَمْسَى قَالَ « أَمْسَيْنَا وَأَمْسَى الْمُلْكُ لِلَّهِ وَالْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ لاَ إِلَهَ إِلاَّ اللَّهُ وَحْدَهُ لاَ شَرِيكَ لَهُ ». قَالَ الْحَسَنُ فَحَدَّثَنِى الزُّبَيْدُ أَنَّهُ حَفِظَ عَنْ إِبْرَاهِيمَ فِى هَذَا « لَهُ الْمُلْكُ وَلَهُ الْحَمْدُ وَهُوَ عَلَى كُلِّ شَىْءٍ قَدِيرٌ اللَّهُمَّ أَسْأَلُكَ خَيْرَ هَذِهِ اللَّيْلَةِ وَأَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ شَرِّ هَذِهِ اللَّيْلَةِ وَشَرِّ مَا بَعْدَهَا اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّى أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنَ الْكَسَلِ وَسُوءِ الْكِبَرِ اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّى أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ عَذَابٍ فِى النَّارِ وَعَذَابٍ فِى الْقَبْرِ ».

It was narrated that 'Abdullah said: "When evening came, the Messenger of Allah (s.a.w) would say: 'Amsaina wa amsalmulku-lillahi, wal-hamdulillahi, la ilaha illallahu wahdahu la sharika lah (We have reached the evening and the Dominion belongs to Allah, and praise be to Allah, none has the right to be worshiped but Allah alone with no partner or associate)."' He said "I think he also said: 'Lahul-mulku wa lahul-hamdu wa huwa 'ala kulli shay'in qadir. Rabbi as'aluka khaira ma fi hadhihil-lailati wa khaira ma ba'daha, wa a'udhu bika min sharri ma fi hadhihil-lailati wa sharri ma ba'daha Rabbi a'udhu bika min 'adhabin fin-nari wa 'adhabin fil-qabr (His is the dominion, to Him is praise and He has power over all things. O Allah, I ask You for the good of this night and the good of what follows it, and I seek refuge in You from the evil of this night and the evil of what follows it. O Lord, I seek refuge with You from laziness and the evil of arrogance. O Lord, I seek refuge with You from torment in the Fire and torment in the grave).'" And when morning came he would say that too: 'Asbahna wa asbahal-mulkulillah (We have reached the morning and the Dominion belongs to Allah...)."'

حَدَّثَنَا عُثْمَانُ بْنُ أَبِى شَيْبَةَ حَدَّثَنَا جَرِيرٌ عَنِ الْحَسَنِ بْنِ عُبَيْدِ اللَّهِ عَنْ إِبْرَاهِيمَ بْنِ سُوَيْدٍ عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ يَزِيدَ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ قَالَ كَانَ نَبِىُّ اللَّهِ -صلى الله عليه وسلم- إِذَا أَمْسَى قَالَ « أَمْسَيْنَا وَأَمْسَى الْمُلْكُ لِلَّهِ وَالْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ لاَ إِلَهَ إِلاَّ اللَّهُ وَحْدَهُ لاَ شَرِيكَ لَهُ ». قَالَ أُرَاهُ قَالَ فِيهِنَّ « لَهُ الْمُلْكُ وَلَهُ الْحَمْدُ وَهُوَ عَلَى كُلِّ شَىْءٍ قَدِيرٌ رَبِّ أَسْأَلُكَ خَيْرَ مَا فِى هَذِهِ اللَّيْلَةِ وَخَيْرَ مَا بَعْدَهَا وَأَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ شَرِّ مَا فِى هَذِهِ اللَّيْلَةِ وَشَرِّ مَا بَعْدَهَا رَبِّ أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنَ الْكَسَلِ وَسُوءِ الْكِبَرِ رَبِّ أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ عَذَابٍ فِى النَّارِ وَعَذَابٍ فِى الْقَبْرِ ». وَإِذَا أَصْبَحَ قَالَ ذَلِكَ أَيْضًا « أَصْبَحْنَا وَأَصْبَحَ الْمُلْكُ لِلَّهِ ».

It was narrated that 'Abdullah said: "When evening came the Messenger of Allah (s.a.w) would say: 'Amsaina wa amsal-mulkulillahi, wal-hamdulillahi la ilaha illallahu wahdahu la sharika lah. Allahumma inni as'aluka min khaira hadhihil-lailati, wa khairi ma fiha, wa a'udhu bika min sharriha wa sharri ma fiha. Allahumma inni a'udhu bika minal-kasali wal-harmi wa su'il-kibar, wa fitnatid-dunya wa 'adhabil-qabr (We have reached the evening and the dominion belongs to Allah, and praise is to Allah, none has the right to be worshiped but Allah alone with no partner or associate. O Allah, I ask You for the good of this night and the good of what is in it, and I seek refuge with You from the evil of this night and the evil of what is in it. O Allah, I seek refuge with You from laziness, old age and the evil of arrogance, and the trials of this world and the torment of the grave)."'

حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ أَبِى شَيْبَةَ حَدَّثَنَا حُسَيْنُ بْنُ عَلِىٍّ عَنْ زَائِدَةَ عَنِ الْحَسَنِ بْنِ عُبَيْدِ اللَّهِ عَنْ إِبْرَاهِيمَ بْنِ سُوَيْدٍ عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ يَزِيدَ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ قَالَ كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ -صلى الله عليه وسلم- إِذَا أَمْسَى قَالَ « أَمْسَيْنَا وَأَمْسَى الْمُلْكُ لِلَّهِ وَالْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ لاَ إِلَهَ إِلاَّ اللَّهُ وَحْدَهُ لاَ شَرِيكَ لَهُ اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّى أَسْأَلُكَ مِنْ خَيْرِ هَذِهِ اللَّيْلَةِ وَخَيْرِ مَا فِيهَا وَأَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ شَرِّهَا وَشَرِّ مَا فِيهَا اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّى أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنَ الْكَسَلِ وَالْهَرَمِ وَسُوءِ الْكِبَرِ وَفِتْنَةِ الدُّنْيَا وَعَذَابِ الْقَبْرِ ». قَالَ الْحَسَنُ بْنُ عُبَيْدِ اللَّهِ وَزَادَنِى فِيهِ زُبَيْدٌ عَنْ إِبْرَاهِيمَ بْنِ سُوَيْدٍ عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ يَزِيدَ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ رَفَعَهُ أَنَّهُ قَالَ « لاَ إِلَهَ إِلاَّ اللَّهُ وَحْدَهُ لاَ شَرِيكَ لَهُ لَهُ الْمُلْكُ وَلَهُ الْحَمْدُ وَهُوَ عَلَى كُلِّ شَىْءٍ قَدِيرٌ ».

It was narrated from Abu Hurairah that the Messenger of Allah (s.a.w) used to say: "La ilaha illallahu wahdahu, a'azza jundahu wa nasara 'abdahu, wa ghalabal-ahzaba wahdahu fa la shay'a ba'dah (None has the right to be worshiped but Allah alone, He granted victory to His troops, supported His slave and defeated the confederates alone, and there is nothing after Him)."

حَدَّثَنَا قُتَيْبَةُ بْنُ سَعِيدٍ حَدَّثَنَا لَيْثٌ عَنْ سَعِيدِ بْنِ أَبِى سَعِيدٍ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنْ أَبِى هُرَيْرَةَ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ -صلى الله عليه وسلم- كَانَ يَقُولُ « لاَ إِلَهَ إِلاَّ اللَّهُ وَحْدَهُ أَعَزَّ جُنْدَهُ وَنَصَرَ عَبْدَهُ وَغَلَبَ الأَحْزَابَ وَحْدَهُ فَلاَ شَىْءَ بَعْدَهُ ».

It was narrated that 'Ali said: The Messenger of Allah (s.a.w) said: Say: "Allahumma ihdini wa saddidni (O Allah, guide me and make me steadfast),' and when you mention guidance remember those who guide people along the road, and when you mention steadfastness remember those who shoot arrows."

حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو كُرَيْبٍ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْعَلاَءِ حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ إِدْرِيسَ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ عَاصِمَ بْنَ كُلَيْبٍ عَنْ أَبِى بُرْدَةَ عَنْ عَلِىٍّ قَالَ قَالَ لِى رَسُولُ اللَّهِ -صلى الله عليه وسلم- « قُلِ اللَّهُمَّ اهْدِنِى وَسَدِّدْنِى وَاذْكُرْ بِالْهُدَى هِدَايَتَكَ الطَّرِيقَ وَالسَّدَادِ سَدَادَ السَّهْمِ ».

It was narrated from Juwayriyah that the Prophet (s.a.w) left her one morning when he prayed Subh, (i.e., Fajr prayer) and she was in her prayer-place, then he came back after the forenoon had come, and she was still sitting there. He said: "Are you still as you were when I left you?" She said: "Yes." The Prophet (s.a.w) said: "After I left you I said four words three times, which if they were weighed against what you have said today, they would outweigh it: Subhan-Allahi wa bi-hamdihi 'adada khalqihi, wa rida nafsihi, wa zinata 'arshihi, wa midada kalimatih (Glory and praise is to Allah, as much as the number of His creation, as much as pleases Him, as much as the weight of His Throne and as much as the ink of His words)."

حَدَّثَنَا قُتَيْبَةُ بْنُ سَعِيدٍ وَعَمْرٌو النَّاقِدُ وَابْنُ أَبِى عُمَرَ - وَاللَّفْظُ لاِبْنِ أَبِى عُمَرَ - قَالُوا حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ مَوْلَى آلِ طَلْحَةَ عَنْ كُرَيْبٍ عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ عَنْ جُوَيْرِيَةَ أَنَّ النَّبِىَّ -صلى الله عليه وسلم- خَرَجَ مِنْ عِنْدِهَا بُكْرَةً حِينَ صَلَّى الصُّبْحَ وَهِىَ فِى مَسْجِدِهَا ثُمَّ رَجَعَ بَعْدَ أَنْ أَضْحَى وَهِىَ جَالِسَةٌ فَقَالَ « مَا زِلْتِ عَلَى الْحَالِ الَّتِى فَارَقْتُكِ عَلَيْهَا ». قَالَتْ نَعَمْ. قَالَ النَّبِىُّ -صلى الله عليه وسلم- « لَقَدْ قُلْتُ بَعْدَكِ أَرْبَعَ كَلِمَاتٍ ثَلاَثَ مَرَّاتٍ لَوْ وُزِنَتْ بِمَا قُلْتِ مُنْذُ الْيَوْمِ لَوَزَنَتْهُنَّ سُبْحَانَ اللَّهِ وَبِحَمْدِهِ عَدَدَ خَلْقِهِ وَرِضَا نَفْسِهِ وَزِنَةَ عَرْشِهِ وَمِدَادَ كَلِمَاتِهِ ».

'Ali narrated that Fatimah complained about the pain caused to her hand by the mill, and some prisoners (of war) had been brought to the Prophet (s.a.w) ' so she went but did not find him, but she met 'Aishah and told her. When the Prophet (s.a.w) came, 'Aishah told him about Fatimah coming to her. The Prophet (s.a.w) came to us, and we had gone to bed. We started to get up, but the Prophet (s.a.w) said: "Stay where you are." Then he sat between us, until I could feel the coolness of his foot on my chest. Then he said: "Shall I not teach you something better than what you asked for? When you go to your bed, proclaim the greatness of Allah thirty-four times, glorify Him thirty-three times and praise Him thirty-three times. That is better for you than a servant."

حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْمُثَنَّى وَمُحَمَّدُ بْنُ بَشَّارٍ - وَاللَّفْظُ لاِبْنِ الْمُثَنَّى - قَالاَ حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ جَعْفَرٍ حَدَّثَنَا شُعْبَةُ عَنِ الْحَكَمِ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ ابْنَ أَبِى لَيْلَى حَدَّثَنَا عَلِىٌّ أَنَّ فَاطِمَةَ اشْتَكَتْ مَا تَلْقَى مِنَ الرَّحَى فِى يَدِهَا وَأَتَى النَّبِىَّ -صلى الله عليه وسلم- سَبْىٌ فَانْطَلَقَتْ فَلَمْ تَجِدْهُ وَلَقِيَتْ عَائِشَةَ فَأَخْبَرَتْهَا فَلَمَّا جَاءَ النَّبِىُّ -صلى الله عليه وسلم- أَخْبَرَتْهُ عَائِشَةُ بِمَجِىءِ فَاطِمَةَ إِلَيْهَا فَجَاءَ النَّبِىُّ -صلى الله عليه وسلم- إِلَيْنَا وَقَدْ أَخَذْنَا مَضَاجِعَنَا فَذَهَبْنَا نَقُومُ فَقَالَ النَّبِىُّ -صلى الله عليه وسلم- « عَلَى مَكَانِكُمَا ». فَقَعَدَ بَيْنَنَا حَتَّى وَجَدْتُ بَرْدَ قَدَمِهِ عَلَى صَدْرِى ثُمَّ قَالَ « أَلاَ أُعَلِّمُكُمَا خَيْرًا مِمَّا سَأَلْتُمَا إِذَا أَخَذْتُمَا مَضَاجِعَكُمَا أَنْ تُكَبِّرَا اللَّهَ أَرْبَعًا وَثَلاَثِينَ وَتُسَبِّحَاهُ ثَلاَثًا وَثَلاَثِينَ وَتَحْمَدَاهُ ثَلاَثًا وَثَلاَثِينَ فَهُوَ خَيْرٌ لَكُمَا مِنْ خَادِمٍ ».

A Hadith like that of Al-Hakam from Ibn Abi Laila (no. 6915) was narrated from 'Ali from the Prophet (s.a.w). In the Hadith he added: "Ali said: 'I have not abandoned it since I heard it from the Prophet (s.a.w).' It was said to him: 'Not even on the night of Siffin?' He said: 'Not even on the night of Siffin.'" In the Hadith of 'Ata' from Mujahid it is narrated that Ibn Abi Laila said: "He said: 'I said to him: "Not even on the night of Siffin?

وَحَدَّثَنِى زُهَيْرُ بْنُ حَرْبٍ حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ بْنُ عُيَيْنَةَ عَنْ عُبَيْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ أَبِى يَزِيدَ عَنْ مُجَاهِدٍ عَنِ ابْنِ أَبِى لَيْلَى عَنْ عَلِىِّ بْنِ أَبِى طَالِبٍ ح وَحَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ نُمَيْرٍ وَعُبَيْدُ بْنُ يَعِيشَ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ نُمَيْرٍ حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الْمَلِكِ عَنْ عَطَاءِ بْنِ أَبِى رَبَاحٍ عَنْ مُجَاهِدٍ عَنِ ابْنِ أَبِى لَيْلَى عَنْ عَلِىٍّ عَنِ النَّبِىِّ -صلى الله عليه وسلم-. بِنَحْوِ حَدِيثِ الْحَكَمِ عَنِ ابْنِ أَبِى لَيْلَى وَزَادَ فِى الْحَدِيثِ قَالَ عَلِىٌّ مَا تَرَكْتُهُ مُنْذُ سَمِعْتُهُ مِنَ النَّبِىِّ -صلى الله عليه وسلم-. قِيلَ لَهُ وَلاَ لَيْلَةَ صِفِّينَ قَالَ وَلاَ لَيْلَةَ صِفِّينِ. وَفِى حَدِيثِ عَطَاءٍ عَنْ مُجَاهِدٍ عَنِ ابْنِ أَبِى لَيْلَى قَالَ قُلْتُ لَهُ وَلاَ لَيْلَةَ صِفِّينَ؟

It was narrated from Abu Hurairah that Fatimah came to the Prophet (s.a.w) to ask him for a servant, and she complained about her work. He said: "We do not have anything to give you.'' He said: "Shall I not tell you about something that is better for you than a servant? Say: 'Subhan Allah' thirty-three times, 'Al-hamdu Lillah' thirty-three times, and 'Allahu Akbar' thirty-four times, when you go to bed.''

حَدَّثَنِى أُمَيَّةُ بْنُ بِسْطَامَ الْعَيْشِىُّ حَدَّثَنَا يَزِيدُ - يَعْنِى ابْنَ زُرَيْعٍ - حَدَّثَنَا رَوْحٌ وَهُوَ ابْنُ الْقَاسِمِ عَنْ سُهَيْلٍ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنْ أَبِى هُرَيْرَةَ أَنَّ فَاطِمَةَ أَتَتِ النَّبِىَّ -صلى الله عليه وسلم- تَسْأَلُهُ خَادِمًا وَشَكَتِ الْعَمَلَ فَقَالَ « مَا أَلْفَيْتِيهِ عِنْدَنَا ». قَالَ « أَلاَ أَدُلُّكِ عَلَى مَا هُوَ خَيْرٌ لَكِ مِنْ خَادِمٍ تُسَبِّحِينَ ثَلاَثًا وَثَلاَثِينَ وَتَحْمَدِينَ ثَلاَثًا وَثَلاَثِينَ وَتُكَبِّرِينَ أَرْبَعًا وَثَلاَثِينَ حِينَ تَأْخُذِينَ مَضْجَعَكِ ».
