قَالَ قَآىِٕلٌ مِّنْهُمْ اِنِّیْ كَانَ لِیْ قَرِیْنٌۙ۝۵۱

Said one of the speakers: "I had a friend

یَّقُوْلُ اَىِٕنَّكَ لَمِنَ الْمُصَدِّقِیْنَ۝۵۲

Who used to say: ´Are you one of those who can testify to the truth?

ءَاِذَا مِتْنَا وَ كُنَّا تُرَابًا وَّ عِظَامًا ءَاِنَّا لَمَدِیْنُوْنَ۝۵۳

(Do you think) we would be paid back our due when we are dead and reduced to dust and bones?´

قَالَ هَلْ اَنْتُمْ مُّطَّلِعُوْنَ۝۵۴

He said: ´Will you look down?´

فَاطَّلَعَ فَرَاٰهُ فِیْ سَوَآءِ الْجَحِیْمِ۝۵۵

He looked down and saw (his friend) in the midst of Hell.

قَالَ تَاللّٰهِ اِنْ كِدْتَّ لَتُرْدِیْنِۙ۝۵۶

´By God´, he said, ´you had almost ruined me.

وَ لَوْ لَا نِعْمَةُ رَبِّیْ لَكُنْتُ مِنَ الْمُحْضَرِیْنَ۝۵۷

Had it not been for the grace of my Lord I too would have been there (in Hell).

اَفَمَا نَحْنُ بِمَیِّتِیْنَۙ۝۵۸

(Another will say:)"Is it true, we are not going to die

اِلَّا مَوْتَتَنَا الْاُوْلٰی وَ مَا نَحْنُ بِمُعَذَّبِیْنَ۝۵۹

Other than our first death, and we shall not be punished?

اِنَّ هٰذَا لَهُوَ الْفَوْزُ الْعَظِیْمُ۝۶۰

This will indeed be great happiness.
