It was narrated from Abu Qatadah that the Messenger of Allah (s.a.w) said: "When one of you enters the Masjid, let him pray two Rak'ah before he sits down."

حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ مَسْلَمَةَ بْنِ قَعْنَبٍ وَقُتَيْبَةُ بْنُ سَعِيدٍ قَالاَ حَدَّثَنَا مَالِكٌ ح وَحَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ يَحْيَى قَالَ قَرَأْتُ عَلَى مَالِكٍ عَنْ عَامِرِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ الزُّبَيْرِ عَنْ عَمْرِو بْنِ سُلَيْمٍ الزُّرَقِىِّ عَنْ أَبِى قَتَادَةَ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ -صلى الله عليه وسلم- قَالَ « إِذَا دَخَلَ أَحَدُكُمُ الْمَسْجِدَ فَلْيَرْكَعْ رَكْعَتَيْنِ قَبْلَ أَنْ يَجْلِسَ ».

It was narrated that Abu Qatadah, the Companion of the Messenger of Allah (s.a.w), said: "I entered the Masjid and the Messenger of Allah (s.a.w) was sitting among the people, so I sat down. The, Messenger of Allah (s.a.w) said:· 'What kept you from praying two Rak'ah before you sat down?' I said: 'O Messenger of Allah, I saw you sitting and the people sitting.' He said: 'When one of you enters the Masjid, let him not sit down until he has prayed two Rak'ah."'

حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ أَبِى شَيْبَةَ حَدَّثَنَا حُسَيْنُ بْنُ عَلِىٍّ عَنْ زَائِدَةَ قَالَ حَدَّثَنِى عَمْرُو بْنُ يَحْيَى الأَنْصَارِىُّ حَدَّثَنِى مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَحْيَى بْنِ حَبَّانَ عَنْ عَمْرِو بْنِ سُلَيْمِ بْنِ خَلْدَةَ الأَنْصَارِىِّ عَنْ أَبِى قَتَادَةَ صَاحِبِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ -صلى الله عليه وسلم- قَالَ دَخَلْتُ الْمَسْجِدَ وَرَسُولُ اللَّهِ -صلى الله عليه وسلم- جَالِسٌ بَيْنَ ظَهْرَانَىِ النَّاسِ - قَالَ - فَجَلَسْتُ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ -صلى الله عليه وسلم- « مَا مَنَعَكَ أَنْ تَرْكَعَ رَكْعَتَيْنِ قَبْلَ أَنْ تَجْلِسَ ». قَالَ فَقُلْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ رَأَيْتُكَ جَالِسًا وَالنَّاسُ جُلُوسٌ. قَالَ « فَإِذَا دَخَلَ أَحَدُكُمُ الْمَسْجِدَ فَلاَ يَجْلِسْ حَتَّى يَرْكَعَ رَكْعَتَيْنِ ».

It was narrated that Jabir bin 'Abdullah said: "The Prophet (s.a.w) owed me something, and he paid me back and gave me something extra. I entered upon him in the Masjid and he said to me: 'Pray two Rak'ah."'

حَدَّثَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ جَوَّاسٍ الْحَنَفِىُّ أَبُو عَاصِمٍ حَدَّثَنَا عُبَيْدُ اللَّهِ الأَشْجَعِىُّ عَنْ سُفْيَانَ عَنْ مُحَارِبِ بْنِ دِثَارٍ عَنْ جَابِرِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ قَالَ كَانَ لِى عَلَى النَّبِىِّ -صلى الله عليه وسلم- دَيْنٌ فَقَضَانِى وَزَادَنِى وَدَخَلْتُ عَلَيْهِ الْمَسْجِدَ فَقَالَ لِى « صَلِّ رَكْعَتَيْنِ ».

It was narrated that Jabir bin 'Abdullah said: "I went out with the Messenger of Allah (s.a.w) on a campaign and my camel delayed me because it got exhausted. Then the Messenger of Allah (s.a.w) came before me, and I came the next day. I came to the Masjid and I found him at the door of the Masjid. He said: 'Now have you come?' I said: 'Yes.' He said: 'Leave your camel, and go in and pray two Rak'ah.' So I went in and prayed, then I went back."

وَحَدَّثَنِى مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْمُثَنَّى حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الْوَهَّابِ - يَعْنِى الثَّقَفِىَّ - حَدَّثَنَا عُبَيْدُ اللَّهِ عَنْ وَهْبِ بْنِ كَيْسَانَ عَنْ جَابِرِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ قَالَ خَرَجْتُ مَعَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ -صلى الله عليه وسلم- فِى غَزَاةٍ فَأَبْطَأَ بِى جَمَلِى وَأَعْيَى ثُمَّ قَدِمَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ -صلى الله عليه وسلم- قَبْلِى وَقَدِمْتُ بِالْغَدَاةِ فَجِئْتُ الْمَسْجِدَ فَوَجَدْتُهُ عَلَى بَابِ الْمَسْجِدِ قَالَ « الآنَ حِينَ قَدِمْتَ ». قُلْتُ نَعَمْ. قَالَ « فَدَعْ جَمَلَكَ وَادْخُلْ فَصَلِّ رَكْعَتَيْنِ ». قَالَ فَدَخَلْتُ فَصَلَّيْتُ ثُمَّ رَجَعْتُ.

It was narrated that 'Abdullah bin Shaqiq said: "I said to 'Aishah: 'Did the Prophet (s.a.w) pray Duha?' She said: 'No, unless he was returning from a journey."'

وَحَدَّثَنَا عُبَيْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ مُعَاذٍ حَدَّثَنَا أَبِى حَدَّثَنَا كَهْمَسُ بْنُ الْحَسَنِ الْقَيْسِىُّ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ شَقِيقٍ قَالَ قُلْتُ لِعَائِشَةَ أَكَانَ النَّبِىُّ -صلى الله عليه وسلم- يُصَلِّى الضُّحَى قَالَتْ لاَ إِلاَّ أَنْ يَجِىءَ مِنْ مَغِيبِهِ.

It was narrated that 'Aishah said: "I never saw the Messenger of Allah (s.a.w) praying the voluntary prayer of Duha but I used to do it. If the Messenger of Allah (s.a.w) gave up an action that he liked to do, it was for fear that the people would do it and it would be made obligatory for them."

حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ يَحْيَى قَالَ قَرَأْتُ عَلَى مَالِكٍ عَنِ ابْنِ شِهَابٍ عَنْ عُرْوَةَ عَنْ عَائِشَةَ أَنَّهَا قَالَتْ مَا رَأَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ -صلى الله عليه وسلم- يُصَلِّى سُبْحَةَ الضُّحَى قَطُّ. وَإِنِّى لأُسَبِّحُهَا وَإِنْ كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ -صلى الله عليه وسلم- لَيَدَعُ الْعَمَلَ وَهُوَ يُحِبُّ أَنْ يَعْمَلَ بِهِ خَشْيَةَ أَنْ يَعْمَلَ بِهِ النَّاسُ فَيُفْرَضَ عَلَيْهِمْ.

Mu'adhah narrated that she asked 'Aishah: "How many (Rak'ah) did the Messenger of Allah (s.a.w) pray in Duha?" She said: "Four Rak'ah, and however many more he wanted."

حَدَّثَنَا شَيْبَانُ بْنُ فَرُّوخَ حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الْوَارِثِ حَدَّثَنَا يَزِيدُ - يَعْنِى الرِّشْكَ - حَدَّثَتْنِى مُعَاذَةُ أَنَّهَا سَأَلَتْ عَائِشَةَ - رضى الله عنها - كَمْ كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ -صلى الله عليه وسلم- يُصَلِّى صَلاَةَ الضُّحَى قَالَتْ أَرْبَعَ رَكَعَاتٍ وَيَزِيدُ مَا شَاءَ.

It was narrated that 'Abdur-Rahman bin Abi Laila said: "No one told me that he saw the Prophet (s.a.w) praying Duha except Umm Hani'. She narrated that the Prophet (s.a.w) entered her house on the day of the Conquest of Makkah, and prayed eight Rak'ah, and I have never seen him offer any prayer that was briefer than that, but he bowed and prostrated perfectly."

وَحَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْمُثَنَّى وَابْنُ بَشَّارٍ قَالاَ حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ جَعْفَرٍ حَدَّثَنَا شُعْبَةُ عَنْ عَمْرِو بْنِ مُرَّةَ عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ أَبِى لَيْلَى قَالَ مَا أَخْبَرَنِى أَحَدٌ أَنَّهُ رَأَى النَّبِىَّ -صلى الله عليه وسلم- يُصَلِّى الضُّحَى إِلاَّ أُمُّ هَانِئٍ فَإِنَّهَا حَدَّثَتْ أَنَّ النَّبِىَّ -صلى الله عليه وسلم- دَخَلَ بَيْتَهَا يَوْمَ فَتْحِ مَكَّةَ فَصَلَّى ثَمَانِىَ رَكَعَاتٍ مَا رَأَيْتُهُ صَلَّى صَلاَةً قَطُّ أَخَفَّ مِنْهَا غَيْرَ أَنَّهُ كَانَ يُتِمُّ الرُّكُوعَ وَالسُّجُودَ. وَلَمْ يَذْكُرِ ابْنُ بَشَّارٍ فِى حَدِيثِهِ قَوْلَهُ قَطُّ.

It was narrated that Ibn Shihab said: "Ibn 'Abdullah bin Al-Harith told me that his father, 'Abdullah bin Al-Harith bin Nawfal, said: 'I asked, and I was keen, to find someone who could tell me that the Messenger of Allah (s.a.w) had prayed Duha. But I could not find anyone who could tell me that except Umm Hani' bint Abi Talib. She told me that after the day had grown bright on the day of the Conquest (of Makkah), the Messenger of Allah (s.a.w) came, and a cloth was brought to form a screen, and he performed Ghusl. Then he stood and prayed eight Rak'ah, and I do not know whether the standing was longer, or the bowing, or prostration; they were all similar in length. And I did not see him offer that prayer before or after."

وَحَدَّثَنِى حَرْمَلَةُ بْنُ يَحْيَى وَمُحَمَّدُ بْنُ سَلَمَةَ الْمُرَادِىُّ قَالاَ أَخْبَرَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ وَهْبٍ أَخْبَرَنِى يُونُسُ عَنِ ابْنِ شِهَابٍ قَالَ حَدَّثَنِى ابْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ الْحَارِثِ أَنَّ أَبَاهُ عَبْدَ اللَّهِ بْنَ الْحَارِثِ بْنِ نَوْفَلٍ قَالَ سَأَلْتُ وَحَرَصْتُ عَلَى أَنْ أَجِدَ أَحَدًا مِنَ النَّاسِ يُخْبِرُنِى أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ -صلى الله عليه وسلم- سَبَّحَ سُبْحَةَ الضُّحَى فَلَمْ أَجِدْ أَحَدًا يُحَدِّثُنِى ذَلِكَ غَيْرَ أَنَّ أُمَّ هَانِئٍ بِنْتَ أَبِى طَالِبٍ أَخْبَرَتْنِى أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ -صلى الله عليه وسلم- أَتَى بَعْدَ مَا ارْتَفَعَ النَّهَارُ يَوْمَ الْفَتْحِ فَأُتِىَ بِثَوْبٍ فَسُتِرَ عَلَيْهِ فَاغْتَسَلَ ثُمَّ قَامَ فَرَكَعَ ثَمَانِىَ رَكَعَاتٍ لاَ أَدْرِى أَقِيَامُهُ فِيهَا أَطْوَلُ أَمْ رُكُوعُهُ أَمْ سُجُودُهُ كُلُّ ذَلِكَ مِنْهُ مُتَقَارِبٌ - قَالَتْ - فَلَمْ أَرَهُ سَبَّحَهَا قَبْلُ وَلاَ بَعْدُ. قَالَ الْمُرَادِىُّ عَنْ يُونُسَ. وَلَمْ يَقُلْ أَخْبَرَنِى.

It was narrated from Abu An-Nadr that Abu Murrah, the freed slave of Umm Hani' bint Abi Talib, told him that he heard Umm Hani' bint Abi Talib say: "I went to the Messenger of Allah (s.a.w) during the year of the Conquest, and I found him performing Ghusl, and Fatimah, his daughter, was screening him with a cloth. I greeted him with Salam and he said: 'Who is this?' I said: 'Umm Hani' bint Abi Talib.' He said: 'Welcome, Umm Hani'.' When he had finished his Ghusl, he prayed eight Rak'ah, wrapped in a single garment. When he had finished I said: 'O Messenger of Allah, my mother's son 'Ali bin Abi Talib says that he is going to kill a man to whom I have given protection; so-and-so bin Hubairah.' The Messenger of Allah (s.a.w) said: 'We grant protection to the one to whom Umm Hani' has given protection.' Umm Hani' said: 'That was at the time of Duha."'

حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ يَحْيَى قَالَ قَرَأْتُ عَلَى مَالِكٍ عَنْ أَبِى النَّضْرِ أَنَّ أَبَا مُرَّةَ مَوْلَى أُمِّ هَانِئٍ بِنْتِ أَبِى طَالِبٍ أَخْبَرَهُ أَنَّهُ سَمِعَ أُمَّ هَانِئٍ بِنْتَ أَبِى طَالِبٍ تَقُولُ ذَهَبْتُ إِلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ -صلى الله عليه وسلم- عَامَ الْفَتْحِ فَوَجَدْتُهُ يَغْتَسِلُ وَفَاطِمَةُ ابْنَتُهُ تَسْتُرُهُ بِثَوْبٍ - قَالَتْ - فَسَلَّمْتُ فَقَالَ « مَنْ هَذِهِ ». قُلْتُ أُمُّ هَانِئٍ بِنْتُ أَبِى طَالِبٍ. قَالَ « مَرْحَبًا بِأُمِّ هَانِئٍ ». فَلَمَّا فَرَغَ مِنْ غُسْلِهِ قَامَ فَصَلَّى ثَمَانِىَ رَكَعَاتٍ مُلْتَحِفًا فِى ثَوْبٍ وَاحِدٍ. فَلَمَّا انْصَرَفَ قُلْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ زَعَمَ ابْنُ أُمِّى عَلِىُّ بْنُ أَبِى طَالِبٍ أَنَّهُ قَاتِلٌ رَجُلاً أَجَرْتُهُ فُلاَنُ بْنُ هُبَيْرَةَ. فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ -صلى الله عليه وسلم- « قَدْ أَجَرْنَا مَنْ أَجَرْتِ يَا أُمَّ هَانِئٍ ». قَالَتْ أُمُّ هَانِئٍ وَذَلِكَ ضُحًى.
