It was narrated that Ibn Masud [may Allah be pleased with them] said, ‘Allah’s Messenger said: “No one of you should let the Adhan of Bilal or the call of Bilal’ – prevent him from eating his sahur. Rather he calls the Adhan’ – or ‘gives the call’ – ‘so that the standing (one who is praying Qiyam) may return (to rest) and the one who is asleep may awaken.’” Then he said: “‘It is not when it is like this,’ “and he moved his hand up and down, “ ‘rather it is when it is like this,’” and he spread his fingers out.

حَدَّثَنَا زُهَيْرُ بْنُ حَرْبٍ حَدَّثَنَا إِسْمَاعِيلُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ عَنْ سُلَيْمَانَ التَّيْمِىِّ عَنْ أَبِى عُثْمَانَ عَنِ ابْنِ مَسْعُودٍ - رضى الله عنه - قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ -صلى الله عليه وسلم- « لاَ يَمْنَعَنَّ أَحَدًا مِنْكُمْ أَذَانُ بِلاَلٍ - أَوْ قَالَ نِدَاءُ بِلاَلٍ - مِنْ سَحُورِهِ فَإِنَّهُ يُؤَذِّنُ - أَوْ قَالَ يُنَادِى - بِلَيْلٍ لِيَرْجِعَ قَائِمَكُمْ وَيُوقِظَ نَائِمَكُمْ ». وَقَالَ « لَيْسَ أَنْ يَقُولَ هَكَذَا وَهَكَذَا -وَصَوَّبَ يَدَهُ وَرَفَعَهَا - حَتَّى يَقُولَ هَكَذَا ». وَفَرَّجَ بَيْنَ إِصْبَعَيْهِ.

It was narrated from Sulaiman At-Taimi with this chain (a Hadith similar to no.2541), but the Hadith of Al-Mu’tamir ends with the words: “so that the one who is asleep may wake up and the standing (one who is praying Qiyam) may return (to rest).”Ishaq said: “Jarir said in his Hadith: ’It is not when it is like this, rather it is when it is like this’ – meaning the dawn – ‘It is the horizontal one, not the vertical one.’”

وَحَدَّثَنَا أَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ أَبِى شَيْبَةَ حَدَّثَنَا مُعْتَمِرُ بْنُ سُلَيْمَانَ ح وَحَدَّثَنَا إِسْحَاقُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ أَخْبَرَنَا جَرِيرٌ وَالْمُعْتَمِرُ بْنُ سُلَيْمَانَ كِلاَهُمَا عَنْ سُلَيْمَانَ التَّيْمِىِّ بِهَذَا الإِسْنَادِ. وَانْتَهَى حَدِيثُ الْمُعْتَمِرِ عِنْدَ قَوْلِهِ « يُنَبِّهُ نَائِمَكُمْ وَيَرْجِعُ قَائِمَكُمْ ». وَقَالَ إِسْحَاقُ قَالَ جَرِيرٌ فِى حَدِيثِهِ « وَلَيْسَ أَنْ يَقُولَ هَكَذَا وَلَكِنْ يَقُولُ هَكَذَا ». يَعْنِى الْفَجْرَ هُوَ الْمُعْتَرِضُ وَلَيْسَ بِالْمُسْتَطِيلِ.

It was narrated that Anas [may Allah be pleased with them] said: “The Messenger of Allah (SAW) said: ‘Take Sahur, for in Sahur there is blessing.’”

حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ يَحْيَى قَالَ أَخْبَرَنَا هُشَيْمٌ عَنْ عَبْدِ الْعَزِيزِ بْنِ صُهَيْبٍ عَنْ أَنَسٍ ح وَحَدَّثَنَا أَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ أَبِى شَيْبَةَ وَزُهَيْرُ بْنُ حَرْبٍ عَنِ ابْنِ عُلَيَّةَ عَنْ عَبْدِ الْعَزِيزِ عَنْ أَنَسٍ رضى الله عنه ح وَحَدَّثَنَا قُتَيْبَةُ بْنُ سَعِيدٍ حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو عَوَانَةَ عَنْ قَتَادَةَ وَعَبْدِ الْعَزِيزِ بْنِ صُهَيْبٍ عَنْ أَنَسٍ - رضى الله عنه - قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ -صلى الله عليه وسلم- « تَسَحَّرُوا فَإِنَّ فِى السُّحُورِ بَرَكَةً ».

It was narrated that Anas, from Zaid bin Thabit [may Allah be pleased with them] who said: “We ate Sahur with the Messenger of Allah (SAW), then we got up and offered As-Salat (Fajr).”I said: “How long was there between the two?” He said: “(The time it takes to recite ) fifty verses”.

حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ أَبِى شَيْبَةَ حَدَّثَنَا وَكِيعٌ عَنْ هِشَامٍ عَنْ قَتَادَةَ عَنْ أَنَسٍ عَنْ زَيْدِ بْنِ ثَابِتٍ - رضى الله عنه - قَالَ تَسَحَّرْنَا مَعَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ -صلى الله عليه وسلم- ثُمَّ قُمْنَا إِلَى الصَّلاَةِ. قُلْتُ كَمْ كَانَ قَدْرُ مَا بَيْنَهُمَا قَالَ خَمْسِينَ آيَةً.

It was narrated from Shaul bin sa’d [may Allah be pleased with them] that the Messenger of Allah (SAW) said: “The people will remain in goodness so long as they hasten to break the fast.”

حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ يَحْيَى أَخْبَرَنَا عَبْدُ الْعَزِيزِ بْنُ أَبِى حَازِمٍ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنْ سَهْلِ بْنِ سَعْدٍ - رضى الله عنه - أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ -صلى الله عليه وسلم- قَالَ « لاَ يَزَالُ النَّاسُ بِخَيْرٍ مَا عَجَّلُوا الْفِطْرَ ».

It was narrated that Abu ‘Atiyyah said: “Masruq and I entered upon Aishah and said: O Mother of the Believers, there are two men among the Companions of Muhammad (SAW); one of them hastens to break the fast and hasten to offer As-Salat, and the other delays the breaking the fast and delays the prayer.’ She said who hastens to break the fast and hastens to offer As-Salat?’ We said: ‘’Abdullah meaning bin Mas’ud.She said: “That is what the Prophet of Allah (SAW) use to do.” Abu Kuraib added: “The other one was Abu Musa.”

حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ يَحْيَى وَأَبُو كُرَيْبٍ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْعَلاَءِ قَالاَ أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو مُعَاوِيَةَ عَنِ الأَعْمَشِ عَنْ عُمَارَةَ بْنِ عُمَيْرٍ عَنْ أَبِى عَطِيَّةَ قَالَ دَخَلْتُ أَنَا وَمَسْرُوقٌ عَلَى عَائِشَةَ فَقُلْنَا يَا أُمَّ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ رَجُلاَنِ مِنْ أَصْحَابِ مُحَمَّدٍ -صلى الله عليه وسلم- أَحَدُهُمَا يُعَجِّلُ الإِفْطَارَ وَيُعَجِّلُ الصَّلاَةَ وَالآخَرُ يُؤَخِّرُ الإِفْطَارَ وَيُؤَخِّرُ الصَّلاَةَ. قَالَتْ أَيُّهُمَا الَّذِى يُعَجِّلُ الإِفْطَارَ وَيُعَجِّلُ الصَّلاَةَ قَالَ قُلْنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ يَعْنِى ابْنَ مَسْعُودٍ. قَالَتْ كَذَلِكَ كَانَ يَصْنَعُ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ -صلى الله عليه وسلم-. زَادَ أَبُو كُرَيْبٍ وَالآخَرُ أَبُو مُوسَى.

It was narrated that Abu ‘Atiyyah said: “Masruq and I entered upon Aishah [may Allah be pleased with her], and Masruq said to her: ‘There are two men among the Companions of Messenger of Allah (SAW), both of whom are striving to do what is best. One of them hastens to Pray Maghrib and break the fast, and the other delays Maghrib and breaking the fast.’ She said: ‘who hastens to pray Magrib and break the fast?’ He said “Abdullah.’ She said ‘That is how the Messenger of Allah used to do it.’”

وَحَدَّثَنَا أَبُو كُرَيْبٍ أَخْبَرَنَا ابْنُ أَبِى زَائِدَةَ عَنِ الأَعْمَشِ عَنْ عُمَارَةَ عَنْ أَبِى عَطِيَّةَ قَالَ دَخَلْتُ أَنَا وَمَسْرُوقٌ عَلَى عَائِشَةَ - رضى الله عنها - فَقَالَ لَهَا مَسْرُوقٌ رَجُلاَنِ مِنْ أَصْحَابِ مُحَمَّدٍ -صلى الله عليه وسلم- كِلاَهُمَا لاَ يَأْلُو عَنِ الْخَيْرِ أَحَدُهُمَا يُعَجِّلُ الْمَغْرِبَ وَالإِفْطَارَ وَالآخَرُ يُؤَخِّرُ الْمَغْرِبَ وَالإِفْطَارَ.فَقَالَتْ مَنْ يُعَجِّلُ الْمَغْرِبَ وَالإِفْطَارَ قَالَ عَبْدُ اللَّهِ. فَقَالَتْ هَكَذَا كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ -صلى الله عليه وسلم- يَصْنَعُ.

It was narrated that Umar [may Allah be pleased with them] said: “The Messenger of Allah SAW said: ‘When the night comes and the day departs, and the sun sets, then it is time for the fasting person to break his fast.’”

حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ يَحْيَى وَأَبُو كُرَيْبٍ وَابْنُ نُمَيْرٍ - وَاتَّفَقُوا فِى اللَّفْظِ - قَالَ يَحْيَى أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو مُعَاوِيَةَ وَقَالَ ابْنُ نُمَيْرٍ حَدَّثَنَا أَبِى وَقَالَ أَبُو كُرَيْبٍ حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو أُسَامَةَ جَمِيعًا عَنْ هِشَامِ بْنِ عُرْوَةَ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنْ عَاصِمِ بْنِ عُمَرَ عَنْ عُمَرَ - رضى الله عنه - قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ -صلى الله عليه وسلم- « إِذَا أَقْبَلَ اللَّيْلُ وَأَدْبَرَ النَّهَارُ وَغَابَتِ الشَّمْسُ فَقَدْ أَفْطَرَ الصَّائِمُ ». لَمْ يَذْكُرِ ابْنُ نُمَيْرٍ « فَقَدْ ».

It was narrated that Abdullah bin Abi Awfa said: “We were with the Messenger of Allah (SAW) on a journey during the month of Ramadan. When the sun set he said: ‘O so-and-so, dismount and mix something for us.’ He said: ‘O Messenger of Allah, it is still day.’ He said: ‘Dismount and mix something for us.’ So he dismounted and mixed something and brought it to him. The Prophet drank some, then he said, gesturing with his hand: ‘When the sun sets from here, and the nights comes from here, then I is time for the fasting person to break his fast.’”

وَحَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ يَحْيَى أَخْبَرَنَا هُشَيْمٌ عَنْ أَبِى إِسْحَاقَ الشَّيْبَانِىِّ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ أَبِى أَوْفَى - رضى الله عنه - قَالَ كُنَّا مَعَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ -صلى الله عليه وسلم- فِى سَفَرٍ فِى شَهْرِ رَمَضَانَ فَلَمَّا غَابَتِ الشَّمْسُ قَالَ « يَا فُلاَنُ انْزِلْ فَاجْدَحْ لَنَا ». قَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ إِنَّ عَلَيْكَ نَهَارًا. قَالَ « انْزِلْ فَاجْدَحْ لَنَا ». قَالَ فَنَزَلَ فَجَدَحَ فَأَتَاهُ بِهِ فَشَرِبَ النَّبِىُّ -صلى الله عليه وسلم- ثُمَّ قَالَ بِيَدِهِ « إِذَا غَابَتِ الشَّمْسُ مِنْ هَا هُنَا وَجَاءَ اللَّيْلُ مِنْ هَا هُنَا فَقَدْ أَفْطَرَ الصَّائِمُ ».

It was narrated that Ibn Abi Awfa [may Allah be pleased with them] said: “We were with Messenger of Allah (SAW) on a journey, and when the sun set, he said to one man: “Dismount and mix something for us.’ He said: ‘O Messenger of Allah, why not wait till evening?’ He said: ‘Dismount and mix something for us.’ He said: ‘It is still day.’ But he dismounted and mixed something for him to drink, then he said: ‘When you see that the night has come from here’ – and he pointed towards the east-‘then it is time for the fasting person to break his fast.’”

حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ أَبِى شَيْبَةَ حَدَّثَنَا عَلِىُّ بْنُ مُسْهِرٍ وَعَبَّادُ بْنُ الْعَوَّامِ عَنِ الشَّيْبَانِىِّ عَنِ ابْنِ أَبِى أَوْفَى - رضى الله عنه - قَالَ كُنَّا مَعَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ -صلى الله عليه وسلم- فِى سَفَرٍ فَلَمَّا غَابَتِ الشَّمْسُ قَالَ لِرَجُلٍ « انْزِلْ فَاجْدَحْ لَنَا ». فَقَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ لَوْ أَمْسَيْتَ. قَالَ « انْزِلْ فَاجْدَحْ لَنَا ». قَالَ إِنَّ عَلَيْنَا نَهَارًا. فَنَزَلَ فَجَدَحَ لَهُ فَشَرِبَ ثُمَّ قَالَ « إِذَا رَأَيْتُمُ اللَّيْلَ قَدْ أَقْبَلَ مِنْ هَا هُنَا - وَأَشَارَ بِيَدِهِ نَحْوَ الْمَشْرِقِ - فَقَدْ أَفْطَرَ الصَّائِمُ ».
