It was narrated by Abu Hurairah that Messenger of Allah (SAW) said: “The poor person is not the one who may be sent away with a date or two, or a mouthful or two. Rather the poor person is the one who refrains from the asking. Recite if you wish: …. They do not beg of people at all… [Al-Baqarah 2:273]”[2395]

It was narrated by Abu Hurairah that Messenger of Allah (SAW) said: “For one of you to go out and gather firewood on his back, then give it in charity and make himself independent of people thereby, is better than asking a man who may give to him or withhold from him. Awf bin Malik Al-Ashjai said: “We were with the Messenger of Allah (SAW), nine or eight or seven (people) and he said: ‘Will you not pledge your allegiance to the Messenger of Allah (SAW)?’ We had only recently pledged our allegiance, so we said: “We have sworn our allegiance to you, O Messenger of Allah (SAW)”He said: “Will you not pledge your allegiance to the Messenger of Allah (SAW)?”” We said: ‘We have sworn our allegiance to you, O Messenger of Allah (SAW)’ then he said: ‘Will you not pledge your allegiance to the Messenger of Allah (SAW)? We held our hands and said: ‘We pledge our allegiance to you, O Messenger of Allah (SAW). Tell us on what basis we should pledge allegiance to you?’ He said: ‘On the basis that you will worship Allah and not associate anything with Him, and (you will perform) the five time prayers and you will obey Allah – and he whispered- and you will not ask the people for anything. ’I saw that some of those people, if they dropped a whip, they would not ask anyone to hand it to them.’
