It was narrated from Abu Salamah and Ata bin Yasar that they came to Abu Sa’eed Al-Khudri and asked him about Al-Haruriyyah “Did you hear the Messenger of Allah (SAW) mention them?” he said : “I do not know who Al-Haruriyyah are, but I hear the Messenger of Allah (SAW) say: ‘There will be emerge among this Ummah’- and he did not say ‘from them’- ‘people in comparison to whose prayer you will regard your prayer as insignificant. They will recite the Quran but it will not go nay further than their throats. They will pass out of Islam like an arrow passes out of the prey, then the archer looks at his arrow, as its tip and at its end, and its notch, wondering whether there are any traces of blood on it.’”

وَحَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْمُثَنَّى حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الْوَهَّابِ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ يَحْيَى بْنَ سَعِيدٍ يَقُولُ أَخْبَرَنِى مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ عَنْ أَبِى سَلَمَةَ وَعَطَاءِ بْنِ يَسَارٍ أَنَّهُمَا أَتَيَا أَبَا سَعِيدٍ الْخُدْرِىَّ فَسَأَلاَهُ عَنِ الْحَرُورِيَّةِ هَلْ سَمِعْتَ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ -صلى الله عليه وسلم- يَذْكُرُهَا قَالَ لاَ أَدْرِى مَنِ الْحَرُورِيَّةُ وَلَكِنِّى سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ -صلى الله عليه وسلم- يَقُولُ « يَخْرُجُ فِى هَذِهِ الأُمَّةِ - وَلَمْ يَقُلْ مِنْهَا - قَوْمٌ تَحْقِرُونَ صَلاَتَكُمْ مَعَ صَلاَتِهِمْ فَيَقْرَءُونَ الْقُرْآنَ. لاَ يُجَاوِزُ حُلُوقَهُمْ - أَوْ حَنَاجِرَهُمْ - يَمْرُقُونَ مِنَ الدِّينِ مُرُوقَ السَّهْمِ مِنَ الرَّمِيَّةِ فَيَنْظُرُ الرَّامِى إِلَى سَهْمِهِ إِلَى نَصْلِهِ إِلَى رِصَافِهِ فَيَتَمَارَى فِى الْفُوقَةِ هَلْ عَلِقَ بِهَا مِنَ الدَّمِ شَىْءٌ ».

It was narrated that Abu Sa’eed Al-Khudri said: ‘while we were with the Messenger of Allah (SAW) and he was distributing some wealth, Dhul Khuwaysirah, a man from Banu Tamim, came and said: ‘O Messenger of Allah (SAW), be fair!’ The Messenger of Allah (SAW) said: ‘Woe to you! Who will be fair if I man not fair? I will be doomed and lost if I am not fair’ Umar bin Al-Khattab [may Allah pleased with him] stood up and said: ‘’O Messenger of Allah (SAW), shall I not strike his neck? The Messenger of Allah (SAW) said: ‘Let him be, for he has companions, in comparison to whose prayer one of you would regard his prayer as insignificant, and he would regard his fasting as insignificant in comparison to their fasting. They recite the Quran but it does not go any further than their collarbones. They will pass out of Islam as an arrow passes out of the prey, and he (the archer) looks at the tip of it and there is nothing on it, then he looks at the sinews (which tie the arrowhead to the shaft) and there is nothing on them, then he looks at its base and there is nothing on it, then he looks at his feathers and there is nothing on them, because it has gone too fast to be smeared with excrement or blood. Their sign will be a black man, one of whose uppers arms will be like a woman’s breast, or like of quivering flesh. They will emerge when there is division among the people.’ Abu Sa'eed said: ‘I bear witness that I heard this from the Messenger of Allah (SAW), and I bear witness that Ali bin Abi Talib fought them when I was with them. He ordered that this man be sought, and he was found and brought, and I looked at him and (SAW) that he was just as the Messenger of Allah (SAW) had described him. ’

حَدَّثَنِى أَبُو الطَّاهِرِ أَخْبَرَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ وَهْبٍ أَخْبَرَنِى يُونُسُ عَنِ ابْنِ شِهَابٍ أَخْبَرَنِى أَبُو سَلَمَةَ بْنُ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ عَنْ أَبِى سَعِيدٍ الْخُدْرِىِّ ح وَحَدَّثَنِى حَرْمَلَةُ بْنُ يَحْيَى وَأَحْمَدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ الْفِهْرِىُّ قَالاَ أَخْبَرَنَا ابْنُ وَهْبٍ أَخْبَرَنِى يُونُسُ عَنِ ابْنِ شِهَابٍ أَخْبَرَنِى أَبُو سَلَمَةَ بْنُ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ وَالضَّحَّاكُ الْهَمْدَانِىُّ أَنَّ أَبَا سَعِيدٍ الْخُدْرِىَّ قَالَ بَيْنَا نَحْنُ عِنْدَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ -صلى الله عليه وسلم- وَهُوَ يَقْسِمُ قَسْمًا أَتَاهُ ذُو الْخُوَيْصِرَةِ وَهُوَ رَجُلٌ مِنْ بَنِى تَمِيمٍ فَقَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ اعْدِلْ. قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ -صلى الله عليه وسلم- « وَيْلَكَ وَمَنْ يَعْدِلُ إِنْ لَمْ أَعْدِلْ قَدْ خِبْتَ وَخَسِرْتَ إِنْ لَمْ أَعْدِلْ ». فَقَالَ عُمَرُ بْنُ الْخَطَّابِ رضى الله عنه يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ائْذَنْ لِى فِيهِ أَضْرِبْ عُنُقَهُ. قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ -صلى الله عليه وسلم- « دَعْهُ فَإِنَّ لَهُ أَصْحَابًا يَحْقِرُ أَحَدُكُمْ صَلاَتَهُ مَعَ صَلاَتِهِمْ وَصِيَامَهُ مَعَ صِيَامِهِمْ يَقْرَءُونَ الْقُرْآنَ لاَ يُجَاوِزُ تَرَاقِيَهُمْ يَمْرُقُونَ مِنَ الإِسْلاَمِ كَمَا يَمْرُقُ السَّهْمُ مِنَ الرَّمِيَّةِ يُنْظَرُ إِلَى نَصْلِهِ فَلاَ يُوجَدُ فِيهِ شَىْءٌ ثُمَّ يُنْظَرُ إِلَى رِصَافِهِ فَلاَ يُوجَدُ فِيهِ شَىْءٌ ثُمَّ يُنْظَرُ إِلَى نَضِيِّهِ فَلاَ يُوجَدُ فِيهِ شَىْءٌ - وَهُوَ الْقِدْحُ - ثُمَّ يُنْظَرُ إِلَى قُذَذِهِ فَلاَ يُوجَدُ فِيهِ شَىْءٌ سَبَقَ الْفَرْثَ وَالدَّمَ. آيَتُهُمْ رَجُلٌ أَسْوَدُ إِحْدَى عَضُدَيْهِ مِثْلُ ثَدْىِ الْمَرْأَةِ أَوْ مِثْلُ الْبَضْعَةِ تَدَرْدَرُ يَخْرُجُونَ عَلَى حِينِ فُرْقَةٍ مِنَ النَّاسِ ». قَالَ أَبُو سَعِيدٍ فَأَشْهَدُ أَنِّى سَمِعْتُ هَذَا مِنْ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ -صلى الله عليه وسلم- وَأَشْهَدُ أَنَّ عَلِىَّ بْنَ أَبِى طَالِبٍ - رضى الله عنه - قَاتَلَهُمْ وَأَنَا مَعَهُ فَأَمَرَ بِذَلِكَ الرَّجُلِ فَالْتُمِسَ فَوُجِدَ فَأُتِىَ بِهِ حَتَّى نَظَرْتُ إِلَيْهِ عَلَى نَعْتِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ -صلى الله عليه وسلم- الَّذِى نَعَتَ.

It was narrated from Abu Sa'eed that Prophet (SAW) mentioned some people who would be among his Ummah; they would emerge when there was division among the people, and their distinguishing feature would be shaving. He said: ‘They are the most of the evil of the people.’ Or said: ‘they are the among most evil of people’- ‘and the group that is closer to the truth will kill them.’ The Prophet (SAW) gave a likeness of them, or said: ‘A man shoots at the prey’- or the ‘the target’- ‘then he looks at the arrow and he does not see any sign (of blood); he looks at he lowest end of the arrow and he does not see any sign (of blood); he look at the notch and he does not see any sign (of blood). Abu Sa'eed said: ‘And you have killed them, O people of Al-Iraq. ’ ’

وَحَدَّثَنِى مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْمُثَنَّى حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ أَبِى عَدِىٍّ عَنْ سُلَيْمَانَ عَنْ أَبِى نَضْرَةَ عَنْ أَبِى سَعِيدٍ أَنَّ النَّبِىَّ -صلى الله عليه وسلم- ذَكَرَ قَوْمًا يَكُونُونَ فِى أُمَّتِهِ يَخْرُجُونَ فِى فُرْقَةٍ مِنَ النَّاسِ سِيمَاهُمُ التَّحَالُقُ قَالَ « هُمْ شَرُّ الْخَلْقِ - أَوْ مِنْ أَشَرِّ الْخَلْقِ - يَقْتُلُهُمْ أَدْنَى الطَّائِفَتَيْنِ إِلَى الْحَقِّ ». قَالَ فَضَرَبَ النَّبِىُّ -صلى الله عليه وسلم- لَهُمْ مَثَلاً أَوْ قَالَ قَوْلاً « الرَّجُلُ يَرْمِى الرَّمِيَّةَ - أَوْ قَالَ الْغَرَضَ - فَيَنْظُرُ فِى النَّصْلِ فَلاَ يَرَى بَصِيرَةً وَيَنْظُرُ فِى النَّضِىِّ فَلاَ يَرَى بَصِيرَةً وَيَنْظُرُ فِى الْفُوقِ فَلاَ يَرَى بَصِيرَةً ». قَالَ قَالَ أَبُو سَعِيدٍ وَأَنْتُمْ قَتَلْتُمُوهُمْ يَا أَهْلَ الْعِرَاقِ.

It was narrated that Abu Sa'eed Al-Khudri said: ‘The Messenger of Allah (SAW) said: ‘A group will secede from my Ummah at a time of division among the Muslims, and they will be killed by the group that is closer to the truth.’’

حَدَّثَنَا شَيْبَانُ بْنُ فَرُّوخَ حَدَّثَنَا الْقَاسِمُ - وَهُوَ ابْنُ الْفَضْلِ الْحُدَّانِىُّ - حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو نَضْرَةَ عَنْ أَبِى سَعِيدٍ الْخُدْرِىِّ قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ -صلى الله عليه وسلم- « تَمْرُقُ مَارِقَةٌ عِنْدَ فُرْقَةٍ مِنَ الْمُسْلِمِينَ يَقْتُلُهَا أَوْلَى الطَّائِفَتَيْنِ بِالْحَقِّ ».

Ali said: When I narrate to you from the Messenger of Allah (SAW), it would be dearer to me to be thrown down from the sky than to attribute to him something that he did not say. But if I speak between you and I, then war is deceit. I heard the Messenger of Allah (SAW) said: “There will be emerge at the end of the time people who are young in a age and foolishly immature, but their speech will be like the best of people. They will recite the Quran but it will not go any further than their throats, and they will pass out of the religion as an arrow passes out of the prey. If you encounter them, then kill them, for killing them brings to one who kills them reward with Allah on the Day of Resurrection.”

حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ نُمَيْرٍ وَعَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ سَعِيدٍ الأَشَجُّ جَمِيعًا عَنْ وَكِيعٍ - قَالَ الأَشَجُّ حَدَّثَنَا وَكِيعٌ - حَدَّثَنَا الأَعْمَشُ عَنْ خَيْثَمَةَ عَنْ سُوَيْدِ بْنِ غَفَلَةَ قَالَ قَالَ عَلِىٌّ إِذَا حَدَّثْتُكُمْ عَنْ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ -صلى الله عليه وسلم- فَلأَنْ أَخِرَّ مِنَ السَّمَاءِ أَحَبُّ إِلَىَّ مِنْ أَنْ أَقُولَ عَلَيْهِ مَا لَمْ يَقُلْ وَإِذَا حَدَّثْتُكُمْ فِيمَا بَيْنِى وَبَيْنَكُمْ فَإِنَّ الْحَرْبَ خَدْعَةٌ. سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ -صلى الله عليه وسلم- يَقُولُ « سَيَخْرُجُ فِى آخِرِ الزَّمَانِ قَوْمٌ أَحْدَاثُ الأَسْنَانِ سُفَهَاءُ الأَحْلاَمِ يَقُولُونَ مِنْ خَيْرِ قَوْلِ الْبَرِيَّةِ يَقْرَءُونَ الْقُرْآنَ لاَ يُجَاوِزُ حَنَاجِرَهُمْ يَمْرُقُونَ مِنَ الدِّينِ كَمَا يَمْرُقُ السَّهْمُ مِنَ الرَّمِيَّةِ فَإِذَا لَقِيتُمُوهُمْ فَاقْتُلُوهُمْ فَإِنَّ فِى قَتْلِهِمْ أَجْرًا لِمَنْ قَتَلَهُمْ عِنْدَ اللَّهِ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ ».

It was narrated from Abidah that Ali mentioned the Khawarij and said: ‘Among them is a man with a defective arm,’ or “a small arm”. If you would exercise restraint, I would tell you what Allah promised on the tongue of Muhammad (SAW) to those who kill them.” I said: ‘Did you hear that from the Messenger of Allah (SAW)?’ He said: ‘Yes, by the Lord of Kabah; yes, by the Lord of Kabah; yes, by the Lord of Kabah.’

وَحَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ أَبِى بَكْرٍ الْمُقَدَّمِىُّ حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ عُلَيَّةَ وَحَمَّادُ بْنُ زَيْدٍ ح وَحَدَّثَنَا قُتَيْبَةُ بْنُ سَعِيدٍ حَدَّثَنَا حَمَّادُ بْنُ زَيْدٍ ح وَحَدَّثَنَا أَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ أَبِى شَيْبَةَ وَزُهَيْرُ بْنُ حَرْبٍ - وَاللَّفْظُ لَهُمَا - قَالاَ حَدَّثَنَا إِسْمَاعِيلُ ابْنُ عُلَيَّةَ عَنْ أَيُّوبَ عَنْ مُحَمَّدٍ عَنْ عَبِيدَةَ عَنْ عَلِىٍّ قَالَ ذَكَرَ الْخَوَارِجَ فَقَالَ فِيهِمْ رَجُلٌ مُخْدَجُ الْيَدِ - أَوْ مُودَنُ الْيَدِ أَوْ مَثْدُونُ الْيَدِ - لَوْلاَ أَنْ تَبْطَرُوا لَحَدَّثْتُكُمْ بِمَا وَعَدَ اللَّهُ الَّذِينَ يَقْتُلُونَهُمْ عَلَى لِسَانِ مُحَمَّدٍ -صلى الله عليه وسلم- - قَالَ - قُلْتُ آنْتَ سَمِعْتَهُ مِنْ مُحَمَّدٍ -صلى الله عليه وسلم- قَالَ إِى وَرَبِّ الْكَعْبَةِ إِى وَرَبِّ الْكَعْبَةِ إِى وَرَبِّ الْكَعْبَةِ.

Zaid bin Wahb Al-Juhani narrated that he was in army that was with the Ali [may Allah be pleased with him] which went to deal with Khawarij. Ali said: ‘O people, I heard the Messenger of Allah (SAW) say: ‘There will emerge some people from my Ummah who will recite the Quran, and your recitation would seem insignificant in comparison to theirs, and your prayer would seem insignificant in comparison to theirs, and your fasting would seem insignificant in comparison to theirs. They will recite the Quran, thinking that it is in their favor, when in fact it is against them and their prayer will not go any further than their collarbones. They will pass out of the Islam as an arrow passes out of the prey.’ If the army which encounters them knew what has been declared for them on the tongue of their Messenger of Allah (SAW), they would rely upon that action. The sign of that is that among them their is a man who has an upper arm but not forearm, and the end of his upper arm is like a nipple with white hairs. You will go to the Muawiyah and the people of Ash-Sham and you will leave these people to look after your families and wealth. By Allah, I believe that these are the people in question, for they have shed forbidden blood and raided the flocks of people. So march forth, in the Name of Allah.”Salamah bin Kuhail said: “Zaid bin Wahb described to me the stops (made by army) until he said: ‘Then we crossed a bridge, and when we met (the Khawarij), who were being led that day by ‘Abdullah bin Wahb Ar-Rasibi, he (Abdullah) said to (his men): “Throw your spears and draw your sword from their sheaths, for I am afraid that they may urge you to negotiate as they did on the day of (the battle of) Harura.” So they went back and threw their spears and unsheathed their swords, and (the companions of Ali) fought back with their spears, and they the (the Khawarij) were killed and piled up one on top of another, but only two of the people (the companions of Ali) were killed that day. Ali [may Allah be pleased with him] said: ‘See if the deformed one is among them.’ So they looked but they did not find him, Ali [may Allah pleased with him] stood up himself and (looked) until he came to some people who had been killed and piled up one top of another, and he said: “Search them till the last man.” They found him next to earth (at the bottom of the heap) and Ali said the Takbir, then he said: ‘Allah spoke the truth and His Messenger conveyed it.’ Then Abidah As-Salmani went to him and said: “O Commanders of the believers, by Allah, besides Whom there is none worthy worship, did you hear this Hadith from the Messenger of Allah (SAW)? Then he repeated this question three times and Ali affirmed it each time.”’’”

حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ بْنُ حُمَيْدٍ حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّزَّاقِ بْنُ هَمَّامٍ حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الْمَلِكِ بْنُ أَبِى سُلَيْمَانَ حَدَّثَنَا سَلَمَةُ بْنُ كُهَيْلٍ حَدَّثَنِى زَيْدُ بْنُ وَهْبٍ الْجُهَنِىُّ أَنَّهُ كَانَ فِى الْجَيْشِ الَّذِينَ كَانُوا مَعَ عَلِىٍّ - رضى الله عنه - الَّذِينَ سَارُوا إِلَى الْخَوَارِجِ فَقَالَ عَلِىٌّ رضى الله عنه أَيُّهَا النَّاسُ إِنِّى سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ -صلى الله عليه وسلم- يَقُولُ « يَخْرُجُ قَوْمٌ مِنْ أُمَّتِى يَقْرَءُونَ الْقُرْآنَ لَيْسَ قِرَاءَتُكُمْ إِلَى قِرَاءَتِهِمْ بِشَىْءٍ وَلاَ صَلاَتُكُمْ إِلَى صَلاَتِهِمْ بِشَىْءٍ وَلاَ صِيَامُكُمْ إِلَى صِيَامِهِمْ بِشَىْءٍ يَقْرَءُونَ الْقُرْآنَ يَحْسِبُونَ أَنَّهُ لَهُمْ وَهُوَ عَلَيْهِمْ لاَ تُجَاوِزُ صَلاَتُهُمْ تَرَاقِيَهُمْ يَمْرُقُونَ مِنَ الإِسْلاَمِ كَمَا يَمْرُقُ السَّهْمُ مِنَ الرَّمِيَّةِ ». لَوْ يَعْلَمُ الْجَيْشُ الَّذِينَ يُصِيبُونَهُمْ مَا قُضِىَ لَهُمْ عَلَى لِسَانِ نَبِيِّهِمْ -صلى الله عليه وسلم- لاَتَّكَلُوا عَنِ الْعَمَلِ وَآيَةُ ذَلِكَ أَنَّ فِيهِمْ رَجُلاً لَهُ عَضُدٌ وَلَيْسَ لَهُ ذِرَاعٌ عَلَى رَأْسِ عَضُدِهِ مِثْلُ حَلَمَةِ الثَّدْىِ عَلَيْهِ شَعَرَاتٌ بِيضٌ فَتَذْهَبُونَ إِلَى مُعَاوِيَةَ وَأَهْلِ الشَّامِ وَتَتْرُكُونَ هَؤُلاَءِ يَخْلُفُونَكُمْ فِى ذَرَارِيِّكُمْ وَأَمْوَالِكُمْ وَاللَّهِ إِنِّى لأَرْجُو أَنْ يَكُونُوا هَؤُلاَءِ الْقَوْمَ فَإِنَّهُمْ قَدْ سَفَكُوا الدَّمَ الْحَرَامَ وَأَغَارُوا فِى سَرْحِ النَّاسِ فَسِيرُوا عَلَى اسْمِ اللَّهِ. قَالَ سَلَمَةُ بْنُ كُهَيْلٍ فَنَزَّلَنِى زَيْدُ بْنُ وَهْبٍ مَنْزِلاً حَتَّى قَالَ مَرَرْنَا عَلَى قَنْطَرَةٍ فَلَمَّا الْتَقَيْنَا وَعَلَى الْخَوَارِجِ يَوْمَئِذٍ عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ وَهْبٍ الرَّاسِبِىُّ فَقَالَ لَهُمْ أَلْقُوا الرِّمَاحَ وَسُلُّوا سُيُوفَكُمْ مِنْ جُفُونِهَا فَإِنِّى أَخَافُ أَنْ يُنَاشِدُوكُمْ كَمَا نَاشَدُوكُمْ يَوْمَ حَرُورَاءَ. فَرَجَعُوا فَوَحَّشُوا بِرِمَاحِهِمْ وَسَلُّوا السُّيُوفَ وَشَجَرَهُمُ النَّاسُ بِرِمَاحِهِمْ - قَالَ - وَقُتِلَ بَعْضُهُمْ عَلَى بَعْضٍ وَمَا أُصِيبَ مِنَ النَّاسِ يَوْمَئِذٍ إِلاَّ رَجُلاَنِ فَقَالَ عَلِىٌّ رضى الله عنه الْتَمِسُوا فِيهِمُ الْمُخْدَجَ. فَالْتَمَسُوهُ فَلَمْ يَجِدُوهُ فَقَامَ عَلِىٌّ - رضى الله عنه - بِنَفْسِهِ حَتَّى أَتَى نَاسًا قَدْ قُتِلَ بَعْضُهُمْ عَلَى بَعْضٍ قَالَ أَخِّرُوهُمْ. فَوَجَدُوهُ مِمَّا يَلِى الأَرْضَ فَكَبَّرَ ثُمَّ قَالَ صَدَقَ اللَّهُ وَبَلَّغَ رَسُولُهُ - قَالَ - فَقَامَ إِلَيْهِ عَبِيدَةُ السَّلْمَانِىُّ فَقَالَ يَا أَمِيرَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ اللَّهَ الَّذِى لاَ إِلَهَ إِلاَّ هُوَ لَسَمِعْتَ هَذَا الْحَدِيثَ مِنْ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ -صلى الله عليه وسلم- فَقَالَ إِى وَاللَّهِ الَّذِى لاَ إِلَهَ إِلاَّ هُوَ حَتَّى اسْتَحْلَفَهُ ثَلاَثًا وَهُوَ يَحْلِفُ لَهُ.

It was narrated from Ubaidullah bin Abi Rafi, the freed slave of Messenger of Allah (SAW), that when the Haruriyyah rebelled, he was with Ali bin Abi Talib [may Allah pleased with him] . They said: “That is no command but that of Allah.” Ali said: ‘These are true words being used for false purpose. The Messenger of Allah (SAW) described some people, and I recognize their characteristics in these people. ‘They will speak the truth on their tongues but it will not go any further than this’- and he pointed to his throat- ‘and they are the most hated of Allah’s creation to Him. Among them will be a black man, one of whose arms is like the teat of the sheep or a nipple.’’ When Ali bin Abi Talib [may Allah pleased with him] killed them, he said: ‘Look (for that man).’ They looked but did not find any thing. He told them: “Go back, for By Allah, I did not lie nor I was lied to”- (he said this) two or three times, then they found him in a ruin, and they brought him and placed him before him.Ubaidullah said: “I was present when that happened and Ali said that to them.”Yunus added in his report: Bukair said: ‘And a man narrated to me from Ibn Hunain that he said: ‘I saw that black man.’’

حَدَّثَنِى أَبُو الطَّاهِرِ وَيُونُسُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الأَعْلَى قَالاَ أَخْبَرَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ وَهْبٍ أَخْبَرَنِى عَمْرُو بْنُ الْحَارِثِ عَنْ بُكَيْرِ بْنِ الأَشَجِّ عَنْ بُسْرِ بْنِ سَعِيدٍ عَنْ عُبَيْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ أَبِى رَافِعٍ مَوْلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ -صلى الله عليه وسلم- أَنَّ الْحَرُورِيَّةَ لَمَّا خَرَجَتْ وَهُوَ مَعَ عَلِىِّ بْنِ أَبِى طَالِبٍ - رضى الله عنه - قَالُوا لاَ حُكْمَ إِلاَّ لِلَّهِ. قَالَ عَلِىٌّ كَلِمَةُ حَقٍّ أُرِيدَ بِهَا بَاطِلٌ إِنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ -صلى الله عليه وسلم- وَصَفَ نَاسًا إِنِّى لأَعْرِفُ صِفَتَهُمْ فِى هَؤُلاَءِ « يَقُولُونَ الْحَقَّ بِأَلْسِنَتِهِمْ لاَ يَجُوزُ هَذَا مِنْهُمْ - وَأَشَارَ إِلَى حَلْقِهِ - مِنْ أَبْغَضِ خَلْقِ اللَّهِ إِلَيْهِ مِنْهُمْ أَسْوَدُ إِحْدَى يَدَيْهِ طُبْىُ شَاةٍ أَوْ حَلَمَةُ ثَدْىٍ ». فَلَمَّا قَتَلَهُمْ عَلِىُّ بْنُ أَبِى طَالِبٍ - رضى الله عنه - قَالَ انْظُرُوا. فَنَظَرُوا فَلَمْ يَجِدُوا شَيْئًا فَقَالَ ارْجِعُوا فَوَاللَّهِ مَا كَذَبْتُ وَلاَ كُذِبْتُ. مَرَّتَيْنِ أَوْ ثَلاَثًا ثُمَّ وَجَدُوهُ فِى خَرِبَةٍ فَأَتَوْا بِهِ حَتَّى وَضَعُوهُ بَيْنَ يَدَيْهِ. قَالَ عُبَيْدُ اللَّهِ وَأَنَا حَاضِرُ ذَلِكَ مِنْ أَمْرِهِمْ. وَقَوْلِ عَلِىٍّ فِيهِمْ زَادَ يُونُسُ فِى رِوَايَتِهِ قَالَ بُكَيْرٌ وَحَدَّثَنِى رَجُلٌ عَنِ ابْنِ حُنَيْنٍ أَنَّهُ قَالَ رَأَيْتُ ذَلِكَ الأَسْوَدَ.

It was narrated that Abu Dharr said: ‘The Messenger of Allah (SAW) said: ‘After me among my Ummah there will be people who recite the Quran, but it does not go any further than their throats. They will pass out of the religion as an arrow passes out of the prey, then they will not return of it. They are the most evil people of the mankind and of all creation.’’Ibn As-Samit said: “I met Rafi bin Amr Al-Ghifari, the brother of Al-Hakam Al-Ghifari, and I said: ‘What is this Hadith that I have heard from Abu Dharr, (saying) such and such?’ And I quoted this Hadith to him. He said: ‘I heard this from the Messenger of Allah (SAW) too.’”

حَدَّثَنَا شَيْبَانُ بْنُ فَرُّوخَ حَدَّثَنَا سُلَيْمَانُ بْنُ الْمُغِيرَةِ حَدَّثَنَا حُمَيْدُ بْنُ هِلاَلٍ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ الصَّامِتِ عَنْ أَبِى ذَرٍّ قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ -صلى الله عليه وسلم- « إِنَّ بَعْدِى مِنْ أُمَّتِى - أَوْ سَيَكُونُ بَعْدِى مِنْ أُمَّتِى - قَوْمٌ يَقْرَءُونَ الْقُرْآنَ لاَ يُجَاوِزُ حَلاَقِيمَهُمْ يَخْرُجُونَ مِنَ الدِّينِ كَمَا يَخْرُجُ السَّهْمُ مِنَ الرَّمِيَّةِ ثُمَّ لاَ يَعُودُونَ فِيهِ هُمْ شَرُّ الْخَلْقِ وَالْخَلِيقَةِ ». فَقَالَ ابْنُ الصَّامِتِ فَلَقِيتُ رَافِعَ بْنَ عَمْرٍو الْغِفَارِىَّ أَخَا الْحَكَمِ الْغِفَارِىِّ قُلْتُ مَا حَدِيثٌ سَمِعْتُهُ مِنْ أَبِى ذَرٍّ كَذَا وَكَذَا فَذَكَرْتُ لَهُ هَذَا الْحَدِيثَ فَقَالَ وَأَنَا سَمِعْتُهُ مِنْ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ -صلى الله عليه وسلم-.

It was narrated that Yusair bin Amr said: ‘I asked Sahl bin Hunaif: ‘Did you hear the Prophet (SAW) mention the Khawarij?’ He said: ‘I heard him’- and he gestured towards the east – (say:) ‘People who recite the Quran on their lips, but it will not go any further than their collarbones. They will pass out of the religion as an arrow passes out of the prey.’’

حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ أَبِى شَيْبَةَ حَدَّثَنَا عَلِىُّ بْنُ مُسْهِرٍ عَنِ الشَّيْبَانِىِّ عَنْ يُسَيْرِ بْنِ عَمْرٍو قَالَ سَأَلْتُ سَهْلَ بْنَ حُنَيْفٍ هَلْ سَمِعْتَ النَّبِىَّ -صلى الله عليه وسلم- يَذْكُرُ الْخَوَارِجَ فَقَالَ سَمِعْتُهُ - وَأَشَارَ بِيَدِهِ نَحْوَ الْمَشْرِقِ « قَوْمٌ يَقْرَءُونَ الْقُرْآنَ بِأَلْسِنَتِهِمْ لاَ يَعْدُو تَرَاقِيَهُمْ يَمْرُقُونَ مِنَ الدِّينِ كَمَا يَمْرُقُ السَّهْمُ مِنَ الرَّمِيَّةِ ».
